Corpus-Based Material Design and Lesson Plan

Hello everyone!

This is my first time posting something; actually, the introduction doesn’t count. I hope you enjoy and learn something after reading this post.

I will talk about my group homework and explain the process.

We prepared a lesson plan based on the ASSURE model and a corpus-based teaching material. You probably don't know about these terms. Let me explain to you.

The ASSURE model is a handy guide for planning lessons that really connect with students. It stands for Analyze learners, State objectives, Select media and materials, utilize media and materials, require learner participation, and evaluate and revise. In simple terms, it helps teachers design lessons that fit their students’ needs, keep them engaged, and make sure everything runs smoothly.

A corpus is a large collection of real-life texts, like books, conversations, and articles, that helps us study how language is actually used in everyday life. And COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) is a massive online database of English texts from books, websites, newspapers, and more. It stores huge amounts of information about how words and phrases are used in different contexts.

As for the process, we first designed our material. We paid attention to these 4 design principles for corpus-based learning and teaching materials:

1. Test student knowledge

2. Hands-on corpus searches by students

3. Inductive discovery by students

4- Output exercise

Then, we prepared our lesson plan.

To be honest, corpora are incredible sources for everyone, but especially for language learners. Still, learning to use it takes so much time, and even I had difficulty learning it. I have doubts about how students would benefit from a corpus.

I finished another day completing an assignment and sharing it with you guys. Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for further posts. See you later!
