AR/VR Integrated Teaching Material

Hi everyone!

Welcome back to my blog. I hope you're all doing well. Today's post is about another assignment from the same course. This time, the task was to create AR/VR-integrated teaching material.

Before starting with the assignment itself, let me explain what AR and VR are.
Augmented reality (AR) is all about blending the real and virtual worlds. Instead of immersing you in a completely new environment, it enhances your physical surroundings by adding interactive digital elements like graphics, sounds, or other data. Pokémon GO and Instagram filters are examples of AR.

Virtual reality (VR) is about creating a completely virtual environment that replaces the physical world. It immerses you so deeply that your brain feels like you're ''there'' in the virtual world. You do not see the physical environment. Games and training simulations are examples of VR.

The point we focused on was how these technologies can be beneficial for language classes. Firstly, students are more likely to stay focused and motivated. Also, VR simulations can immerse students in real-life scenarios like ordering food in a restaurant. Another one is that AR can make abstract concepts, like grammar rules or vocabulary, more concrete through 3D models or interactive activities.

Like every technology, they have disadvantages, too. Since these can be used by high-quality devices, it is costly and not applicable to every language class. Another one is that not all classrooms are equipped with the necessary tools to use these technologies. Lastly, teachers may need further training to use AR/VR effectively.

While doing this assignment, we all met online and designed everything together. Every one of us did something. We discussed which landmarks to introduce, etc. The biggest problem we had—not a big one, but the biggest—was to meet at a certain time because we were four, and finding a time when all of us were available was a bit hard. But we could at the end, of course.

We used Canva to design our material, which students will use after experiencing these technologies.
To create the QR codes in the worksheets, we used this website.
The video we chose to introduce croissants is here.
Here is the link for the lesson plan.
